New Delhi: A Congress delegation met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday demanding more security for the party top brass, including vice president Rahul Gandhi, in view of a letter threatening the Gandhi scion's life which was received by the party's Puducherry unit.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a public rally tomorrow in Puducherry, where assembly elections will be held next week on May 16.


The threat letter, as per the Puducherry unit of the Congress party, is written in Tamil. Congress leader Narayanasamy is believed to have received letter threatening to assassinate Rahul Gandhi.


As per reports, the delegation included senior Congress leaders like Anand Sharma and Ahmed Patel, which met Rajnath Singh and demanded adequate security for their leader. They also urged the central government to investigate the threats.


Rahul Gandhi and other members of his family are protected by the elite Special Protection Group, the highest level of security in the country. Only Prime Ministers, former PM and their families are protected by the SPG, apart from the Gandhi family.


The law was amended to include the families of former Prime Ministers under SPG cover after the assassination of Rahul's father and former PM Rajiv Gandhi during an election campaign in Tamil Nadu in 1991.
