Bhopal: Hundreds of people, including survivors of the Bhopal gas leak disaster, on Thursday took part in rallies and prayer meetings on the 31st anniversary of the tragedy that claimed thousands of lives.

The survivors of the Union Carbide gas leak said they will continue with their battle for punishment to the guilty corporations and for additional compensation for the victims.

Members of five organisations of survivors took out a rally from Bhopal Talkies. They also burnt effigies of officials of Union Carbide and Dow Chemical Company.

Rashida Bi of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh said that even after a report by a Supreme Court monitoring committee, no steps have been taken to ensure proper medical treatment for the disaster survivors.

Satinath Sarangi of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action questioned the intentions of the central and Madhya Pradesh governments, and urged people to put pressure on the governments to punish those guilty.
