At the rally here, the controversial leader and former Maharashtra home minister said that if Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Sudhakar Khade, who was arrested on rape charges in 2007, wanted to be a MLA, then he could have committed the crime after the elections.

"Khade's supporters came to me and lend me their support. I asked them why were they doing so? They said their candidate was in the prison in a rape case."

"If he (Sudhakar Khade) wanted to become a MLA, he should have committed rape after the election", he said.

Later, Patil said that he did not intent to hurt anybody.

This is not the first time Patil has made such outrageous and insensitive remark.

Earlier this year, Patil had said that crime against women could not be prevented even if guards were provided for every single household. He had, however, retracted from the controversial statement later.
