New Delhi: There is an increase in incidents of theft of passengers` belongings in long-distance trains as well as in Tamil Nadu Express and GT Express, the Rajya Sabha was told on Friday.
In all, 3,463 incidents of theft of passengers` belongings were reported to Government Railway Police from January 1 to June 25 this year, including 49 incidents in Tamil Nadu Express and GT Express, Minister of State for Railway Manoj Sinha said in a written reply in the House. Policing on railways is a state subject and prevention of crime, registration of cases, their investigation and maintenance of law and order are the responsibility of state governments which they discharge through Government Railway Police (GRP).
However, Railway Protection Force (RPF) supplements the efforts of GRP by deploying its staff for escorting of important trains in affected areas and access control duties at important and sensitive stations. He said regular coordination meetings are held with state police at all levels to ensure proper registration and investigation of crime by GRP.
