New Delhi: Keeping up with its tradition, Google today honours world renowned yoga guru BKS Iyengar with a creative doodle marking his 97th birthday.

With brilliant animation, the doodle features several asanas performed by Iyengar. Born on December 14, 1918 in Bellur, Karnataka, Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar introduced Iyengar Yoga to the world. It is a form of Hatha Yoga which lays emphasis on physical alignment of the body while one is performing different asanas.


According to Wikipedia, BKS Iyengar has systematised over 200 classical yoga poses and 14 different types of Pranayama (with variations of many of them) ranging from the basic to advanced.


One of India`s best known yoga instructors, Iyengar was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2014.


Iyengar had also authored numerous books on Yoga, its practices and various techniques. He was also named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2004.


The legendary yoga guru breathed his last at the age of 95 and passed away in August 20, 2014.
