Washington: Microsoft-owned video call service Skype encountered a worldwide outage Monday morning at about 09:00 BST, preventing its customers from making calls.

The bug put many Skype users as invisible although they are connected - causing them unable to make calls.


In a statement, Microsoft said: “We have detected an issue with the status settings of Skype.


Affected users will not be able to change their status, their contacts will all show as offline and they will be unable to start Skype calls to them.”


“Instant messages are still being delivered as usual. The status issue also doesn't affect Skype for web, which can be used to make calls and send instant messages.”


Skype said it was working on a quick fix for this issue, adding that it would update users soon.


It also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the bug.


Skype has around 300 million users, making it one of the world's most popular social networks.
