Previously known as the Deka arm, the Luke arm - developed by Segway creator Dean Kamen and DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) - integrates the latest technology in electronics, motors, batteries, and materials.

It received marketing approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014. It is said that the LUKE arm is the first prosthetic arm cleared by the US FDA in the new product category for integrated prosthetic arms.

The Luke prosthetic arm will will deliver a number of new capabilities to amputees, including a powered shoulder joint that can reach overhead or behind the back, as per DEKA's Mobius Bionics, which is preparing the arm for launch in late 2016.

“Working one-on-one with the amputees and learning what they liked and didn’t like about using prostheses proved invaluable to our product development process. Thanks to their insight and input, we have been able to construct the most advanced FDA-cleared design that the world of upper-limb prosthetics has seen to date,” Kamen said in a release.
