A team of police in Itahari in southern Nepal detained the India-bound monks for taking the children in an unauthorised manner in a bus at Itahari Bus Station, according to sources at the Nepal Police Headquarters.

The arrested monks, however, claimed that the children were being taken to Deharadun where they will be taught to become monks later.

The monks did not posses valid documents for sending the children to India for learning Buddhist education.

The children, all aged between 8 to 13, have been sent to a child shelter in Biratnagar and investigation into the incident was underway, police said.
