Canberra: Outgoing Australian prime minister Tony Abbott was in for a rather 'tearless' tribute on Twitter as he was defeated by Malcolm Turbull in a leadership challenge on Monday.

No sooner did the Australians learn about the ouster of Tony Abbott in the surprise snap ballot, than the Twitter went crazy as hilarious tweets with hashtag #PutOutYourOnions poured in to mark Abbott's departure as prime minister.

The Twitteratis posted hilarious reactions on their outgoing PM Abbott's defeat in the leadership challenge, remembering his onion-eating moment in Tasmania when he had bitten into a whole raw onion while touring a farm.


The hashtag #PutOutYourOnions is derived from #PutOutYourBats that trended on Twitter when the Australians put their bats out to pay tribute to the batsman Phillip Hughes, who had died last year after being hit on the head by a ball.


That was a sombre tribute.


However, the latest reactions coming from Aussies on the departure of Abbott from PM's post, are far from being sad or tearful.
