Turkish President Recep Erdogan said on a live TV broadcast that Turkey is "deeply saddened" by the execution, and has recalled the ambassador Devrim Ozturk back to Ankara, Xinhua cited Dogan news agency as saying.

The Turkish foreign ministry had strongly condemned the Islamist leader`s execution in a written statement on Wednesday.

Nizami was hanged at the Dhaka Central Jail on Wednesday after he was convicted of atrocities during Bangladesh`s war of independence with Pakistan in 1971.
