UN chief concerned about Haiti``s election process

Ban Ki-moon urged the Haitian authorities and other political actors to resolve their outstanding issues and conclude the election process.

United States: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday renewed his concern about the prolonged election process for Haiti`s new president.

In a statement released by his spokesman here, Ban urged the Haitian authorities and other political actors to resolve their outstanding issues and conclude the election process "as soon as possible, in a transparent, inclusive and credible manner".

Haiti is yet to finalise presidential elections, which began with voting on October 25, 2015. The UN Secretary-General has been concerned about political instability due to the uncertainty of the election process, after the results of the initial vote were published in December, Xinhua news agency reported.

A runoff, which was set to take place on December 27, did not take place as scheduled, which has prompted Ban`s Special Representative in Haiti, Sandra Honore, to urge all parties to ensure a peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected president by February 7.
