During the protest, women threw liquor bottles on roads.

"I have sent a team to Astoli village to inquire. We have been holding regular campaigns against liquor mafias and raiding premises and checking vehicles," District Excise Official R K Singh said.

As liquor is cheaper in Haryana, liquor mafias smuggle it to Uttar Pradesh. We have intensified the drive against illegal liquor smuggling, he said.

"Illegal liquor supply in villages and other areas can be effectively checked with public support. I have appealed to the residents to contact the excise department or send information at district magistrate's war room cell. One can even send an online complaint," Singh said.

In November, 34 cases were registered against illegal liquor smugglers and 1,049 litres of illicit liquor was seized and 14 liquor smugglers have been jailed, Singh said.
