RBI to release high denomination Rs 2000 currency note in 2017?
Zee Media Bureau
New Delhi: Twitter is abuzz with tweets of pink coloured Rs 2000 note bundles. Some of the posts even claim that the Reserve Bank of India is planning to circulate these high denomination notes in 2017.
The Hindu BusinessLine, citing sources, had reported in October that RBI is planning to bring Rs 2000 notes into circulation. It added that the printing of these notes has been completed at the Mysuru currency printing facility and are being dispatched. Interestingly, the new notes bear the signature of the new RBI Governor Urjit Patel.
What is unclear is that whether the pictures of Rs 2000 notes on Twitter are real or fake.
At home, as well as globally, a section of economists are of the view that high denomination notes like Rs 500 or Rs 1000 or equivalent, should be demonetized. The view is that large denomination notes are highly likely to be used for illegal activities and not so much as a medium of ordinary transaction; and elimination of such notes can go a long way in cutting down black money.
