In what could be hinting at a possible third wave of COVID-19 hitting India in the coming weeks, the country recorded more than 40,000 new cases for the sixth consecutive day.

India saw 40,134 fresh coronavirus infections in 24 hours
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday (August 2, 2021) morning informed that India reported 40,134 fresh infections in the last 24 hours.
India on July 27 had recorded less than 30,000 new COVID-19 cases, which was the lowest single-day rise after 132 days but registered 43,654 cases on July 28, the highest in three weeks.
The country then saw 43,509 cases on July 29, followed by 44,230 infections on July 30, 41,649 on July 31 and 41,831 on August 1.
India's active count currently stands at 4.13 lakh
Even though the daily new cases have been less than 50,000 for 36 days now, the number of single-day infections are not seeing a significant decline and the active count has surged to 4,13,718.

India also recorded 422 new coronavirus-related deaths
The country also witnessed 422 coronavirus-related deaths and 36,946 recoveries in the last 24 hours.
With this, the total number of cases has now increased to 3,16,95,958 while the death toll stands at 4,24,773.

Possible third wave of COVID-19 in India in August
This is pertinent to note that a Bloomberg report has warned the country of a possible third wave of COVID-19 hitting India as soon as August.
The report suggested that following the arrival, the country is likely to witness nearly 1,00,000 COVID-19 cases in a day in the best-case scenario or around 1,50,000 infections daily in the worst-case scenario.

However, many researchers have also said that the third wave of COVID-19 is unlikely to be as brutal as the second one, during which, the country had witnessed over 4,00,000 daily cases.
