Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. He married Kasturba Gandhi when he was 13 years old, and together they had four sons. His birthday is also celebrated as "International Day of Non-Violence" to spread the message of non-violence. 

He known as "Bapu" or "Rashtrapita," Gandhi's ideals of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth) shaped India's freedom struggle. His philosophy inspired people worldwide to raise their voices against caste, color, and religious discrimination. 

In 1893, Gandhi went to South Africa to begin his law practice and stayed there for 22 years. After returning to India in 1915, he was advised by Gopalkrishna Gokhale to travel throughout India for a year before starting political work. 

Gandhi led several freedom movements in India, including the non-cooperation movement, civil disobedience movement, and the Quit India movement. Under his leadership, countless people protested against British colonial rule.  

In 1932, Gandhi launched a campaign to abolish untouchability and uplift the lives of untouchables, calling them "Harijans" (Children of God). This movement sought to end discrimination based on caste.  

In 1930, Gandhi was named Person of the Year by Time Magazine. He passed away on January 30, 1948. He is remembered as the Father of the Nation for his instrumental role in securing India’s independence through peaceful means.  

Since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) in 2014, Gandhi Jayanti has been linked with cleanliness campaigns across India. Cleanliness was a principle close to Gandhi’s heart, and the movement marked its 10th anniversary in 2024. (Image Credit: ChatGPT)
