PM Modi said a life lesson his mother taught him was that it was possible to be learned without being formally educated. "My mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers," he had said in his blog.

He said his mother always inspired him to have a strong resolve and focus on "garib kalyan" (welfare of the poor), a theme of his government's numerous welfare schemes.

PM Modi used to take his mother's blessings before any big decision. 

PM Modi said he witnessed three qualities in mother, a journey like that of a tapasvi (saint), a selfless worker and life dedicated to values. 

Heeraben stood like a shield for her sons; from doing minimal chores to earn money to guiding her children with great values, Hira Ba stood by them. 

PM Narendra Modi used to take out time from his schedule whenever he visited Ahmedabad to spend some quality time with his mother. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often highlighted his mother Hiraben's influence in shaping his life as he rose from a humble family background to become India's PM. 

Heeraben, also known as 'Hira Ba' breathed her last earlier today at 3:30am at U N Mehta Heart Hospital, Ahmedabad. She was 100 years old.
