Polling is underway in three states - Goa, Uttarakhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh. How will these prominent leaders fare?
Pushkar Singh Dhami, BJP, Uttarakhand (Khatima)
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is contesting the 2022 Assembly polls from his current constituency, Khatima. In 2017, BJP's Dhami won this seat by defeating Indian National Congress' Bhuwan Chandra Kapri, with a margin of 2709 votes. He took over the baton from Tirath Singh Rawat last year and by bagging the top job in the state at the age of 45, Dhami became the youngest Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. (Pic: ANI)
Pramod Sawant, BJP, Goa (Sanquelim)
A long time MLA from Goa’s Sanquelim constituency, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Sawant is the 13th chief minister of Goa. He is also BJP’s CM candidate for Goa Assembly Elections 2022. Sawant succeeded the CM seat in 2019 after the death of veteran and stalwart leader late Manohar Parrikar. The CM said that he's confident of a BJP win and added that BJP's work in the state over 10 years and PM Modi's self-reliant vision will help the party. (Pic: ANI)
Azam Khan, Samajwadi Party, Uttar Pradesh (Rampur)
A prominent contestant in Uttar Pradesh's second phase is Mohammad Azam Khan, who is also known as the ‘King Khan of Rampur’. Azam Khan is contesting the elections from jail. Khan has been lodged in Sitapur jail since February 2020 last year over several cases registered against him. Khan's entire campaign has been run by his wife Tanzeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam, who is contesting the neighbouring Suar seat. The SP is banking on sympathy for the jailed leader and his family to ensure success on these seats.
Utpal Parrikar, Independent candidate, Goa (Panaji)
Son of veteran BJP leader and former Defence Minister of India, Manohar Parrikar, Utpal Parrikar came into prominence post his father’s death when he stepped foot into politics. The leader recently made headlines after he quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on being denied the ticket from his late father’s Panaji constituency, which is believed to be a BJP bastion since early 1990s, all thanks to late Manohar Parrikar. Now that he's outside the BJP fold, will the Parrikar magic work in Panaji? We will know on March 10. (Pic: ANI)
Harish Singh Rawat, Congress, Uttarakhand (Lalkuan)
A five-time Member of Parliament, Harish Singh Rawat is contesting from the Lalkuan constituency in Nanital district. He was Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2014 to 2017. Born 27 April 1948, Rawat kicked off his electoral innings with Congress in 1980. Rawat also served as President of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee in 2000.
