Government schools are divided into three categories. Class 1-5 is considered Primary Level, Class 6-8 is Secondary Level, and Class 9-12 is Senior Secondary Level. Rules for becoming a primary school teacher vary by state.

To become a primary teacher in a government school, a Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) is required. DElEd is a two-year course that can be pursued after graduation.

Many states conduct entrance exams for admission into the DElEd program. In Uttar Pradesh, the UP DElEd 2024 application process will start soon. Applications can be submitted between September 18 and October 9, 2024, via the official website (updeled.gov.in).
Candidates who complete DElEd can apply for primary teacher recruitment (PRT). Selection is done through a written exam and interview.

In Uttar Pradesh, qualifying the UP Teacher Eligibility Test (UP TET) is essential to apply for primary teacher jobs. Candidates can take this test after post-graduation.

In Uttar Pradesh, primary teachers have a pay scale ranging from Rs 9,300 to Rs 35,400, with additional government allowances. The in-hand salary can go up to Rs 37,000 per month.
B.Ed is no longer required for primary teacher positions. The Supreme Court has removed this requirement. However, for secondary and senior secondary teachers, a B.Ed degree is still mandatory.
