Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 To Start From September 16: Check Route, Fare, Time, Other Details
Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2 Start Date: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off the second phase of the Ahmedabad Metro on September 16, 2024, ending a nearly four-year wait for commuters. This event marks the official commencement of operations for the much-anticipated metro expansion, which is expected to significantly improve public transportation in the city. The second phase of the Ahmedabad Metro is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a modern and efficient transit option for thousands of daily commuters. This milestone is part of a broader effort to boost urban infrastructure and ease transportation challenges in the region.
Route, Stations
This phase of the Ahmedabad Metro extends over 21 kilometers, adding eight new stations to the network. Stretching from Motera to Sector-1 in Gandhinagar, it will connect key locations such as GNLU, PDEU, Gift City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva, Infocity, and Sector-1.
Incomplete Stretches, Project Cost
Phase II of the project, costing Rs 5,384 crore, spans approximately 28.2 kilometers and includes 22 metro stations. This phase will connect Motera station (part of Phase 1’s North-South Corridor) to Mahatma Mandir. However, only eight stations are being opened on September 16 with services running up to Sector-1 in Gandhinagar. The construction of the remaining 14 stations is still underway. In this phase, GNLU will serve as the interchange station for passengers traveling to or from GIFT City. From GNLU, a 5.42-kilometer metro line will extend eastwards to connect GIFT City across the Sabarmati River.
Opening Date, Time
The phase 2 will be officially thrown open by PM Modi on September 16. PM Modi had laid the foundation stone of the stretch on March 4, 2019. The metro trains are available at a gap of around 15-18 minutes starting 6am/7am in the morning. Thus, the phase-2 stations will also have trains running at a frequency of every 15 minutes or so.
Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 Fare
The Metro Rail Extension provides a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to private vehicles, particularly as fuel prices rise and traffic congestion worsens. For instance, the Metro journey from APMC to Gandhinagar’s Sector-1, covering approximately 33 km, takes just 65 minutes and costs Rs 35. In contrast, taxis take over 80 minutes and charge more than Rs 415, while autorickshaws cost around Rs 375 for the same trip. A trip from Ahmedabad to the state capital, Gandhinagar, is expected to cost only Rs 35 per person once phase-2 becomes operational from September 16.
Relief From Traffic
The Metro's use of clean energy and its efficient design will help lower the region's carbon footprint, providing a more sustainable option compared to private transportation. Additionally, the service is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on Ahmedabad's busy roads, reducing pollution and easing the burden on the city's existing infrastructure.
Real Estate Booster
The Metro extension is also projected to spur real estate development, with increased demand for housing and commercial spaces around the new stations. As connectivity improves, investment opportunities and urban growth are expected to flourish.
