German fans came out in huge numbers to support the national team, perhaps confident that the star-studded side would kick-off its World Cup campaign on a high.
Germany is one of the strong favourites to win the World Cup in Russia.
A win on Sunday (June 17) was elusive as Mexican fans were awed by their team's gritty performance - one applauded much by supporters and critics alike.
It was Hirving Lozano who scored in the 35th minute to put his team ahead - much to the cheer of Mexican fans and to the despair of the Germans.
From here on, the Mexicans remained rock solid and despite as many as 26 shots by German strikers, none managed to hit the back of the net.
A special word for Mexican goalie Guillermo Ochoa who managed to keep out everything that was fired at him - especially towards the closing stages of the game.
In the end, the Mexicans withstood the German bliztkrieg to get off to a flying start in the World Cup.
