India at 75: From Neeraj Chopra's golden glory to Sachin Tendulkar's lap of honour - nation's most treasured sporting stories, Part 2
In this three-part series, Zee News English takes a look at 15 of India's greatest sporting achievements.
ICC Champions Trophy in 2013
The Indian cricket unit under MS Dhoni's leadership surely knew how to overturn any situation and finish the contest on a winning note. The finals of the ICC Champions Trophy, which India won after defeating England at Lord's is one such affair.
In the contest it felt like the Indian team were overplayed by the English bowlers and the conditions but a clinical bowling display by Ishant Sharma helped the Men In Blue finish the match on a victorious note. Such was the mood in the camp that a young and jubilant Virat Kohli celebrated the win with the famous Psy's 'Gangnam style' dance move. (Reuters/File Photo)
India lift their second World Cup
If one record that was missing from Sachin Tendulkar's bag of accolades was a World Cup trophy. The Master Blaster's much-awaited dream was fulfilled in the year 2011, when hosts India went on to defeat Sri Lanka in the finale to lift their second World Cup.
As soon as captain Dhoni sent the ball over the long-on fence with his iconic 'helicopter shot', the country erupted in joy. The moment was truly special for the team's most senior player Tendulkar, who was given a free ride around the Wankhede on the shoulders of his teammates, a scene treasured in the hearts of almost every Indian cricket fan. Ravi Dahiya Tokyo Olympic silver medalist
Ravi Dahiya failed to clinch the gold, but making his maiden Olympic appearance in Tokyo, the wrestler made sure he finished at the podium.
The most remarkable moment from Ravi's campaign came during the semifinal match against Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev, when the 23-year-old erased a massive 2-9 deficit to pin his opponent. (Reuters)
Neeraj Chopra Tokyo Olympics gold medalist
As the story goes, Neeraj Chopra has a habit of shattering the records, but earlier this month, the star javelin thrower from India achieved a historic feat, which he later dedicated to late legendary sprinter Milkha Singh.
Neeraj in Tokyo 2020 gave India it's only gold medal but in the process he became the first Indian track and field athlete to finish at the podium at Olympics.
In the finals, Neeraj overpowered world leader Johannes Vetter, who failed to match the Indian's herculean effort at the showpiece event. (Reuters)
India's triumph in 2007 T20 World Cup
After already impressing many with his ferocious batting display, it was time for MS Dhoni to shine as a leader. The 2007 T20 World Cup, which also was the first edition of the tournament, saw India field a young and raw unit, with very few seniors. Going into the tournament, especially on the back of a humiliating first-round exit from the ICC World Cup held earlier in the year in West Indies, very few expected the Dhoni-led unit to return home with a silverware.
However, this was not the case, as India produced a brilliant display, which includes some of the memorable individual performances, and sent the nation in ecstasy by beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the finale. (Reuters/File Photo)
