California wildfire, largest in state's history, continues to burn - In Pics

The wildfire burning in California, considered as largest wildfire overall, has so far destroyed at least 1,045 buildings, including 550 homes, in the northern Sierra Nevada. It started on July 14, by Wednesday morning covered 783 square miles (2,027 square kilometers). See pics

Named as Dixie Fire after the road where it started it has been contained 30%, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection though around 14,000 remote homes are still threatened.

Local, state and federal firefighters have been trying to contain the blaze and local ranchers are using their own equipment to carve out fire lines around homes.

California authorities arrested a man last weekend suspected to have started the fire in remote forested areas. The 47-year-old has been charged with setting a small blaze in Lassen County.

Scientists claim that climate change has made the region warmer and drier and will continue to make the weather more extreme. The fires across the US come as parts of Europe are also enduring large blazes.
