Bukhari on war path with Samajwadi Party
Shahi Imam of the Delhi Jama Masjid has rejected the party`s legislative council ticket for his son-in-law.
New Delhi: Accusing Samajwadi Party of ignoring the Muslim community, Shahi Imam of the Delhi Jama Masjid has rejected the party`s legislative council ticket for his son-in-law, saying at least three Muslims should be given representation in the UP council on SP ticket.
Bukhari yesterday shot off a letter to Mulayam saying he did not want party ticket for his son-in-law Umar Khan. Bukhari had supported the party during UP assembly elections.
Out of seven seats, Bukhari wants at least three for the Muslim community. "Mulayam called me up, and I have conveyed it to him that at least three seats should be given to the community," he said while talking to a news agency.
He rubbished reports that he was crestfallen after his brother did not get a Rajya Sabha ticket from SP.
"These talks are baseless, I never asked for a ticket for my family, Mulayam asked me to suggest names but I refused," he claimed.
Bukhari also targeted senior SP leader Azam Khan, calling him anti-Muslim.
"Azam is an enemy of Muslims, leader in SP are not happy," he said.
Khan had earlier objected to the nomination, saying, "Religious leaders should not be given political gifts."
Muslim community constitutes 20 percent while the Yadavs were only seven per cent of the state`s population. He alleged that when it came to sharing power, the Muslims were ignored by the party.
"I regret to say that SP like the other parties acquired the votes of the Muslims but did not give them an adequate representation," he wrote
Bukhari also said that apart from the legislative council, Muslims from Uttar Pradesh had also been ignored by SP in choosing its Rajya Sabha nominees.
