De Villiers, the Superman of South African cricket, who is already heading the Proteas in One-Day Internationals, seemed quite excited to take the charge of the Test side. And he stated: “It is an honour to captain SA in any format. The captaincy has obviously come at short notice & is the realisation of a lifelong dream.”

CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat also thanked AB for accepting the responsibility.

“I want to thank AB for readily accepting the challenge of rebuilding our Test team as we seek to remain the best team in the world,” said Lorgat.

Fortunes turned for AB after Amla shockingly stepped down after the 2nd Test between South Africa and England at Newlands, which ended in a draw.
