Chennai: Condemning the terror attack on an Israeli diplomat, British Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Jeremy Browne on Tuesday stressed the need for India and Britain to work together to make the world as safe as possible. "...we strongly condemn terrorism and have to hope that we can discourage extremists and terrorist behavior. India is no stranger to terrorism and there have been some terrible incidents in recent years. So we need to work together to try and make sure we keep people as safe as possible around the world," he told reporters after attending a hockey event.
Noting that terrorism and disputes have no geographical limits, he recalled an attack in U.S, making it imperative for all to work jointly "whether it is U.N.,G 20 or the Commonwealth... where both India and Britain are members. To a question on religious extremism, he said extremist Islamic organisations sponsoring terrorism are a concern not only in India, but also in U.K. So both nations have to be vigilant about being as resilient as possible to such threats.
Browne said India, `a fantastic country with an amazing history and diversity and a strong economy` does not need anything to hold it back. People in this country would be very upset with the idea of terrorism or any such thing damaging India`s reputation worldwide and be united in wanting to have a peaceful and prosperous future for the country, he said. Referring to Iran, he said his country has some "serious concerns" about that government`s sponsorship of terrorist organisations and its nuclear weapons ambitions.
As Britain wished to have good relations with all countries it wanted Iran to take on a path which rejects aggression and gives the best opportunities to its people to live peacefully and become more prosperous, he said.
