The off-spinner picked up five wickets to hand India a 17-run lead on Day 2 at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Ashwin's 150th Test scalp was also his 100th on Indian soil.

The only two players to have reached the 150-wicket mark before the Indian are former England seamer Sydney Barnes and Pakistan's Waqar Younis.

Barnes go to that milestone in his 24th match, while it took Waqar 27 Tests to register his name in this elite club.

The first Test against the Proteas was Ashwin's 28th Test.
