New Delhi: Congress on Thursday appeared to disapprove of Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal`s statement in which he spoke of the possibility of President`s rule imposed in Uttar Pradesh if the party does not get majority. "We are in the running to form the government. All Congressmen should desist from speculation," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters here. He was responding to questions on Jaiswal`s statement in Kanpur in the morning that if Congress falls short of some seats in getting a majority there was no no alternative to Governor`s rule in the state.
Tewari said Jaiswal has clarified his position and the matter should be allowed to rest there.
With his remarks causing a furore, Jaiswal retracted later saying he had only talked of the Constitutional possibilities when reporters asked him questions in a situation when no one gets a clear majority.
