New Delhi: Slamming the Opposition for doing politics on the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Congress on Wednesday said that fight against terror should not be reduced to opportunism.
“The party is in talks with the state governments who have concerns on the NCTC and their concerns will be addressed,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said while addressing the media in the national capital.
The Congress leader hinting at the BJP said that some political parties change their stand on certain issues when it suits them to do so. The government has been in the firing line from a host of Chief Ministers on the contentious issue. Chief Ministers from states like Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Chattisgarh have written to the Centre raising concerns regarding infringement on the federal structure of state governments.
The matter was raised by Naveen Patnaik and soon others CMs too joined the chorus. What is a bigger headache for the Congress is that its allies too have been vehemently opposing the NCTC. While Mamata Banerjee has written to the PM, Omar Abdullah said that he will talk to the government on the issue.
Meanwhile, Manmohan Singh wrote to the CMs yesterday reassuring them saying that the Home Minister P Chidambaram will take up the matter with them. Also he said that there was no reasons to worry as the NCTC will work like the IB The NCTC is slated to be operational from March 01. Nonetheless, given the events that have unfolded in the past week, a smooth ride seems unlikely.
