The news was confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket via a media release.

“Every cricketer has to stop at the right time, I feel it’s time to make room for fresh talent to be groomed with the 2019 World Cup in view,” Herath wrote in a letter to SLC.

“Wherever I go, I try not to change anything. I give the ball air and try to get the batsmen out. ….. I figure out the conditions… I have faith in me that I can adjust with the conditions,” he further wrote.

He took 74 wickets from 71 ODIs and was a key member of Sri Lanka's 2014 World T20 campaign. Overall, he has 18 T20I victims from 17 matches.

Herath will remain available for Test team selection.
