Uthappa, playing for Karnataka, tonked 32 runs off an over from part-time off-spinner Dhruv Shorey. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper batsman fell four runs short of what Ravi Shastri had scored in a solitary over in Ranji 1984-85 season.

Uthappa's 141-ball-148 was studded with 16 boundaries and six maximums.

Uthappa's third successive hundred took Karnataka to a comfortable 358 for three against Delhi in the group A league encounter of the Ranji Trophy.

In 1985, Shastri equaled Garry Sobers’s first-class record of scoring six sixes in a six-ball over against left-arm spinner Tilak Raj.

Playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at Swansea in 1968, Sir Gary Sobers had hammered Malcolm Nash for six sixes in a an over.
