Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday dismissed an application by Union minister M K Alagiri, seeking to reject a petition challenging his election from Madurai Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 and imposed costs on him.
CPI-M`s unsuccessful candidate P Mohan, since deceased, had challenged election of Alagiri of DMK.
Mohan was substituted by A Lazar, the alternative candidate of the party, who had filed his nomination from the constituency, but withdrew in favour of Mohan.
Lazar said he was also aggrieved over the returning officer declaring Alagiri the winner.
Alagiri filed an application seeking to strike out certain paragraphs in the election petition and consequently reject the petition. No material particulars of corrupt practices had been given in the petition, he claimed. Lazar contested the claim, stating that all material facts and particulars had been were provided in his petition.
Lazar`s counsel N C Ashok said Justice V Dhanapalan had dismissed Alagari`s application and imposed costs of Rs 5,000 on him. PTI
