The 41-year-old has 11,867 Test runs to his credit, just 87 runs Brian Lara's all-time record for the country.

He also played 268 ODIs for 8778 runs at 41.60 and 22 T20Is.

Despite having not played international cricket since May 2015, the Guyanese remains the only cricketer apart from Sachin Tendulkar to have played over two decades at the highest level.

Here are six interesting records held by this determined and hard working cricketer at the time of his retirement.

1) The left-hander became the first West Indian skipper to score a ton on Test captaincy debut. His unbeaten 239 is the second-highest score by any first-time captain.

2) In 2002 Chanderpaul batted for 1,513 minutes against India. He still holds the record for batting for the longest period of time without being dismissed.

3) In that very innings against India, he faced 1,051 balls, the highest by any batsman without being dismissed.

4) Chanderpaul scored 128* and 97*, 225 in total, against England at the Lord's Test in 2004, which is the highest by anyone who remained unbeaten and ended up on the losing side.

5) With nine Test victims, he tops the list of bowlers that have never taken two wickets in an innings.
