The pacer sustained the injury during the opening match of the series in Durban.

It's a big blow for the hosts as they are already trailing 1-0 in the four-match series.

According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, Steyn was not with the South African squad in Johannesburg on Monday, instead remained in Cape Town where he underwent a further scan.

In the absence of Steyn, who has 406 wickets in 82 Tests under his belt, Kyle Abbott has to play a key role for his side.

South African bowlers bowled brilliantly on the final day of the 2nd Test at Newlands.
