Firing: Jaya slammed for no action against cops
DMK chief M Karunanidhi said there had been precedence and he had acted against an IPS officer in 1998.
Chennai: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday hit out at Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for ruling out action against policemen allegedly involved in the Paramakudi firing incident in the backdrop of a judicial probe and said there had been precedence and he had acted against an IPS officer in 1998.
Without naming former Coimbatore Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran, Karunanidhi recalled that he had ordered transfer of a "senior IPS officer”, who was the top city police official in 1998 when serial blasts rocked it coinciding with the visit of senior BJP leader LK Advani.
Kumaran had been transferred even as the Justice PR Gokulakrishnan Commission of Inquiry was looking into the cause and circumstances leading to the blasts. "Therefore, if there is a will there is a way," Karunanidhi said writing in the DMK mouthpiece `Murasoli’.
Responding to the plea of a section of Opposition including CPI (M) for action against policemen allegedly involved in the firing incident on Sunday which left seven persons dead, Jayalalithaa had said since a judicial probe had been ordered the government can act only on its recommendations and that it cannot take "unilateral" action.
Karunanidhi said had Dalit leader John Pandian be allowed to visit Paramakudi the violence would have been averted. On ruling AIADMK merging the five Anna Universities of Technology with Anna University Chennai, Karunanidhi said it was determined to `cancel all good efforts` of the DMK regime and made a sarcastic remark saying it had come a day ahead of the birth anniversary of Dravidian icon CN Annadurai, also the founder of DMK. The varsities were named after him.
