VIDEO: Jumbo - How Anil Kumble got the famed nickname!
Kumble disclosed the secret during a Question and Answer session on micro-blogging site, Twitter.
New Delhi: Newly appointed Team India coach Anil Kumble on Tuesday revealed that former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu was the player who gave him the nickname “Jumbo”.
Just ahead of Team India's crucial tour of West Indies, where both the sides are scheduled to play 4 Tests, Kumble disclosed the secret during a Question and Answer session on micro-blogging site, Twitter.
“My nickname was coined by none other than Navjot Singh Sidhu. It was during Irani Trophy game when I was playing for Rest of India at Kotla [Feroz Shah Kotla]. He was standing at his customary position, mid-on. One of the balls really took off and he said ‘Jumbo Jet.’ While the ‘Jet’ got dropped off, just the ‘Jumbo’ remained. So ever since all my teammates call me Jumbo,” Kumble said.
Kumble has been appointed the chief coach of Team India for one year. During the Q & A session, Kumble, also stated that he was really excited to work with Kohli.
“I am really excited to work with Virat (Kohli). I have seen him right as a young Under-19 player at RCB and he has matured a lot over the last couple of years. He has shown what a fantastic batsman he is and what a fantastic leader he is in the little that I have seen [him] as Test captain. I am looking forward to that (working with Virat Kohli) he is really aggressive and so was I on the field,” added Kumble.
