Gangtok: Opposition parties and some local organisations have decided to jointly approach the Governor for not giving assent to the Sikkim Disposal and Destruction of Documents and Records Bill, which was recently passed by the Assembly.
Representatives from Congress, BJP, CPI(M), Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad Party, Sikkim Liberation Party, Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Sangathan, SIBLAC and NASBO unanimously resolved at an all-party meeting that the Bill in question was "neither in the interest of the state nor of the nation."
SPCC president Nar Bahadur Bhandari told reporters after the meeting the Bill was "totally undesirable" and has been brought “unnecessarily”. He said leaders of opposition parties and social organisations have decided to approach the Governor, requesting him not to give his assent to the Bill.
The Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Sangathan (NASS) has already submitted a memorandum to the Governor on Saturday requesting him not grant assent to the Bill. A NASS delegation, led by its President T N Dhakal, alleged that the Bill "has been brought to destroy documents pertaining to corruption of the SDF government."
