New Delhi: The construction activities being carried out by Pakistan along the International Border has caused concerns for the Parliamentary panel, which has now suggested to Centre a slew of measures to counter such massive build-up.
Reports, Tuesday, claimed that the Parliamentary panel had asked the government to immediately implement the proposal for the construction of an earthen `bund` on the home side of the fencing.
The suggestions from panel come in view of reports that Pakistan has, in the past few years, erected at least 97 additional `observation post` towers and 162 barracks along the border.
As per panel’s observation, this massive logistic build-up by Pakistan had taken place in the past eight years after both the nations agreed for a `ceasefire` in November, 2003.
Stressing that it is now imperative for the government to implement the proposal for building an earthen `bund` that has been pending for over two years, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs said that the `bund`, which was meant to provide security cover to the persons engaged in fencing work, has become "counterproductive" as it has been helping militants.
The panel submitted its report to the Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari on November 3. The report also referred to the government`s response in this regard and mentioned that the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is now mulling a proposal for the construction of the raised platform-cum-fighting bunkers and road in the Jammu region of the state.
The Parliamentary panel headed by BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu also took a serious view of the logistics strategy for border surveillance and management. The panel in its report titled "Border Fencing and Flood Lighting Projects along Indo-Pak borders in the Country" has also asked the government to replace floodlights and cables along the Indo-Pak border that have now become "obsolete".
The government, on its part, apprised the panel that a proposal regarding upgrade/replacement of the existing border flood lights system in Punjab sector, with new and more illuminating devices, was under examination.
