New Delhi: Burglars broke into the residence of a senior journalist in Vasant Kunj area of South Delhi and escaped with cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, police said on Sunday.
The theft at the residence of Salma Zaidi, 61, who had worked for BBC for about 17 years, took place on Thursday evening, they said. Zaidi currently works for a bi-lingual publication.
"Zaidi and her husband Zargham were not at home when the Vasant Kunj Sector B1 apartment was burgled between 6.30 pm and 7.50 pm on Thursday," police said. When the couple returned, they found that locks of the main door were broken and the whole house was ransacked.
Zaidi claimed that burglars took away gold and diamond jewellery along with 150 pounds and USD 100 in cash. A mobile phone, laptop and a portable DVD player are also missing.
Police said they suspected role of some known persons behind the crime. "We have begun investigation along with a team of fingerprint experts," police said.
A case has been registered against unknown persons at Vasant Kunj North police station. The charges are of house- breaking and theft under Sections 454 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
