Probably playing in his final Liverpool-Manchester United tie, the 34-year-old midfielder seemed to have stamped into the leg of Ander Herrera after he won a close ball first in the 46th minute of the game. Interestingly, the Reds skipper was just arrived in the field after replacing Adam Lallana during the break.

Martin Atkinson, who has conducted numerous high-profile matches in the league, has not shown any hesitation sending off the club legend with a straight red-card. The referee also booked Herrera for the lunge, which probably prompted the former England midfielder to play rough, at least visibly.

The famous March 22 fixture got off to a rousing start, but United found the lead in the 14th minute with a cool finish from Juan Mata, off a diagonal Marouane Fellaini pass.

Gerrard will leave the club at the end of the current season. He has already signed with Major League Soccer club, LA Galaxy.
