Allahabad: Accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of "insulting" people of Uttar Pradesh at his Phulpur rally, BJP`s youth wing burnt his effigy here on Tuesday. "Rahul Gandhi has insulted people of Uttar Pradesh by calling them beggars. The people of the state do move out to earn a living but they have never begged. Whether at home or outside, they have always lived with their heads held high," an activist of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha said. Shouting anti-Rahul slogans, the agitators tear down posters and cut-outs of the Congress leader and set his effigy on fire at the Civil Lines crossing here.
Gandhi, while kicking off Congress` election campaign in UP yesterday had said, "People of Uttar Pradesh are appreciated for their hard work wherever they go in search of job...How long will you beg in Maharashtra (for work)? How long will you work as labourer in Punjab?"
The remark had sparked off a war of words between BJP and Congress. PTI
