New Delhi: CPI on Tuesday appealed to Maoists to unconditionally release abducted Sukuma District Collector Alex Paul Menon and asked Chattisgarh government to do everything possible to achieve a breakthrough.

"Targeting civilian officers, people`s representatives and their security guards who are on duty is meaningless and unhuman activity. Maoists should stop this type of abductions and killings and respect human values," the party said. Menon is not well and needs immediate medical attention. He should be released on human considerations immediately, the party`s Central Secretariat said in a statement. "Chattisgarh government should do everything possible to get the release of the district collector Menon, release the innocent tribals who are in jails and review the `Green Hunt` which is hunting the poor innocent forest dwellers. "We also appeal to Union Home Ministry to take a comprehensive view of the recent developments and not treat it as merely a law and order problem," it said. The party also expressed serious concern at the kidnappings of the foreign tourists and the abduction of Odisha MLA Jhina Hikaka.
