Puducherry: The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has evolved steps to redesign the medical education curriculum both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level of studies.
Director of JIPMER Dr T S Ravikumar told reporters here today that the redesigned curriculum would stress on quality health care and patient safety. The autonomous institute is also collaborating with other universities and exchanging faculty under the `Fulbright Nehru programme`.
Dr Ravikumar said JIPMER had submitted proposals to the Planning Commission for sanction of Rs 1389 crore for various developmental activities, including academic activities and establishment of new institutes in the 12th plan (2012-2017).

Dr Balachander, Head, Department of Cardiology,who was also present said establishment of JIPMER School of Public health, award of degrees in public health and community wellness programmes, hospital modernization, refurbishing old premises, creation of a safety measures and electronic health record system would be part of developmental works in the 12th plan.
Dean of JIPMER Dr K S Reddy said research activity had picked up in JIPMER after it became autonomous.
He said around 40,000 candidates are expected to appear for the May 27 entrance examination for admission to 145 seats for the first year MBBS course for 2012-13. The entrance test would be held in 11 centres across the country including in Chennai, Kolkata and Thiruvananathapuram besides Puducherry.
