Port Blair: Superintendent of Police, South Andaman, SBS Tyagi, who led the team probing the episode of dancing of semi-naked Jarawa tribal women before tourists, has been awarded the President`s Police Medal for meritorious service. Tyagi who had joined Delhi Police as Assitant Commissioner of Police in 1984, joined the Andaman and Nicobar Police as Commandant of Indian Reserve Police since 2009. He has been Superintendent of Police in South Andaman since 2010. He also served as a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Rashtrapati Bhavan as incharge of President`s security during the tenures of APJ Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil.
After the video featuring the dancing jarawa women was posted on the website of a British daily, he was tasked to find the people responsible for videographing semi-naked jarawa women who were asked to dance in front of tourists in exchange for food. Within a fortnight after detailed investigations, South Andaman Police led by Tyagi nabbed two persons responsible for shooting the video and providing it to a UK-based journalist in return for a hefty amount.
