Uttarakhand sees a dip in crime rate
Uttarakhand has registered a decrease of 6.3 per cent in the crime rate this year as compared to last year.

A total of 6,968 cases under the Indian Penal Code have so far been registered in 2011 while as many as 7,455 cases were registered under the IPC provisions in the year 2010, according to a report released by the State Police department. In all, 5,733 cases have also been resolved in 2011 which is to say that the police encountered success in 82 per cent cases registered in the current year.
A system is being developed to ensure effective clampdown on criminals engaged in immoral trafficking and trade.
In order to deal with the menace, two anti-trafficking units have been established in Dehradun and Banbasa which are functioning in association with the Special Task Force (STF) in the two places. These units have been equipped with communication, manpower and other necessary facilities.
Cases are being registered immediately after investigations into incidents involving sexual violence and strict statutory action is being taken against the accused.
Women police personnel in plainclothes have been posted at crowded public places.
According to the report, a five-year plan beginning from 2011-12 to 2015-16 for modernisation of police force has been prepared and sent to the state government as well as the centre for their approval. The report also gives details of a special work plan for improving the law and order in districts including Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehra Dun and Haridwar.
The barriers and check-posts with adequate number of police personnel have been installed in border areas.
Besides, carrying out strict vigil and patrolling on borders of the state, the inter-state border meetings are also being organised for mutual coordination with other states as well as other security agencies like SSB, ITBP and IB.
A special drive is being conducted in the entire state from time to time for checking crimes.
Giving details of various steps that have been taken for checking crime in the districts, the report said regular reviews are conducted at three levels of Circle Officer, Additional Superintendent of Police and the Superintendent of Police in the districts.
All cases related to land disputes are being resolved in proper coordination with revenue officials.
In order to deal with criminal activities, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been prepared keeping in view the geographical conditions of the state.
