Narinder Singh, 46, a superintendent of police, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room in the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) campus here by his wife. He was taken to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The officer, according to police officials, was under depression after being under suspension for the past two years. He was suspended after he was booked in a attempt to murder case in Delhi where he opened fire following a tiff over parking.

Singh, an Arjuna awardee in 1998, had represented India in judo at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The Punjab Police are investigating the incident.
