New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to wish PV Sindhu on her historic silver medal winning performance at Rio Olympics on Friday.

Modi praised the 21-year-old shuttler for fighting it well in the women’s singles badminton final before losing to world number one Carolina Marin of Spain in three gureling games.


“Congrats for the Silver @Pvsindhu1. Very well fought. Your accomplishment at #Rio2016 is historic & will be remembered for years,” the Prime Minister tweeted.



Sindhu, after winning the first game, lost the plot against her agile opponent in pulsating final that lasted for an hour and 23 minutes at the Riocentre.


Sindhu thus became the first Indian woman player to win a silver medal and fifth woman player to win a medal in Olympics.


The two-time World championship bronze medallist is also the youngest Indian individual Olympics medallist.
