Swiss shocker: After Roger Federer, injured Stan Wawrinka now joins 2016 Rio Olympics exodus
Belinda Bencic was another Swiss tennis star to have pulled out of the Olympics.
New Delhi: Days ahead of 2016 Rio Olympics, world number four Stan Wawrinka withdrew from the quadirennial event with a back injury on Tuesday.
Wawrinka, 31, aggravated his back injury in Toronto last week where he reached the semi-finals.
The time Grand Slam winner's withrawal meant that the tennis tournament at the Games will without two Swiss players. Earlier, former world number one Roger Federer ended his season, thus robbing the Games one of greatest athletes.
Belinda Bencic was another Swiss tennis star to have pulled out of the Olympics.
Besides, hosts of top players have already opted out of the Games. Milos Raonic (Canada), Tomas Berdych (Czech), Richard Gasquet (France) in men's and Simona Halep (Romania), Victoria Azarenka (Belarus), Karolina Pliskova (Czech), Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia) in women's are some of the players who will miss the Games.
