The Frenchman, who has won two 1000 Masters titles before, started the match confidently, winning the first set 6-4 in 46 minutes. He broke Nadal in the fifth game.

But the former World number one Nadal played an emphatic game to win the second set 6-0 in 35 minutes. At times, it seemed the Spaniard has found his mojo back.

But, in the deciding set, Tsonga broke the 14-time Grand Slam winner in the 11th game, and served out to win the set and match 7-5.

Tsonga will play the winner of second semi-final, between World number one Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, in Sunday's final at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.
