`Pehredaar Piya Ki` might go off air soon; Smriti Irani ups ante against `objectionable content` shown

New Delhi: At a time when Indian television should be delivering progressive content, we are still stuck to age old practices and formulas of making TRP hit shows. There is a much hullaballoo regarding 'Pehredaar Piya Ki' show right now.
After it faced immense backlash for showing regressive content, angry viewers filed a petition to stop the show from airing owing to its 'objectionable content'. Moreover, the petition was sent to Smriti Zubin Irani, Cabinet Minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting.
According to dnaindia.com, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani has taken the immediate step already. The report quotes the sources as saying that Smriti Irani has forwarded the complaint to the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) after a petition on change.org addressed to her, sought a ban on the show.
The petition was posted by Mansi Jain on Change.org and over 74,000 people have already shown their support to it.
The petition reads, “Pehredar piya ki. - A 10-year-old impressionable little kid(” piyaa”) caressing and stalking a lady who’s more than double his age and filling sindoor in her “maang” is being telecasted at prime time -8:30pm on sony. (Family time) It is to be devoured by the entire Nation. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewers mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such tv serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial.”
Interestingly, the petition garnered more than 1.25 lakh signatures in just few days.
