Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): Asserting that women safety is the top priority of Yogi Adityanath-led government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday lashed out at the opposition for dubbing the anti-Romeo squad as Hindutva agenda and said it is a result of frustration as they failed to maintain law and order in Uttar Pradesh during their tenure.

"The Opposition is worried because they failed to maintain law and order in the state during their tenure. And now, strict actions are taken here during the BJP rule," BJP`s Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Katiyar told ANI.


Katiyar further said the BJP is working on its promise mentioned in the election manifesto."Yogi Adityanath after being sworn-in as the Chief Minister on Sunday has started his work towards the welfare of the state. He created anti-Romeo squad, instructed the police to shutdown slaughter houses and to put complete ban on cow smuggling," he added.


The Samajwadi Party had earlier questioned the BJP on the formation of anti-Romeo squad and alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Government is working as per its Hindutva agenda.


"We will see a lot of these measures in the coming days," said Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal.The Congress had also questioned this move with party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury expressing concern on this initiative while stating that many genuine people might also bear the brunt of the same.


Earlier, on Wednesday, Director General of Police (DGP) Javeed Ahmed along with Adityanath launched the anti-Romeo squads while stating that safety of women is the sole intent of the squads.Adityanath had directed the state police to adopt a zero tolerance towards crime and take immediate steps towards improving law and order in the state.
